The coral island Mombasa is one of those historic places that spins the imagination of many travelers. Popping up thoughts of African trade routes and its tales, mostly romanticised from movies. Besides scuba diving there are plenty of things to do around Mombasa. Near Bamburi, which has one of the best beaches in Kenya (Bamburi Beach), you can find Haller Park, one of the biggest wildlife sanctuaries in Mombasa. It makes, together with the Haller Park Trail or Bamburi Nature Trail, a great trip to learn more about the flora and fauna in Kenya. There are many organized tours into the headlands of Kenya with safaris to Tsavo National Park and guided multiple day hikes up Mount Kenya.

Attractions inside Mombasa are the huge elephant tusks built for Queen Elizabeth in 1952, the 16th century Portuguese built Fort Jesus which gives you a look into the world of colonization and Mamba Village which has a huge crocodile farm. Several Bombolulu Workshops around the northern shores of Mombasa have made fame as a successful project for the physically disabled selling handicrafts and organise entertainment. There are several smaller resort towns such as Nyali, Kisani, Shanzu, Mtwapa, Kikambala and Kilifi on the beautiful shores north of Mombasa, well worth a visit.

In the populated areas you can find all sorts of water activities such as glass bottom boats, banana rides and jet skis. Some of the better dive areas nearby are Nyali Reef, Shanzu Reef and the Mombasa Marine Park running from the Mtwapa creek all the way south to Likoni. There are many shallow reefs perfect for snorkeling, a few interesting shipwrecks and plenty of other dive sites. Sharks, barracudas and shoals of snapper are common inhabitants navigating their way to the already stunning coral formations.
