Watamu is one of the Swahili (or Bajuni) fishing villages where dive tourism is catching up with other nearby holiday resorts. Located 140km to the north of Mombasa, it is actually a small strip of land between Blue Lagoon and Watamu Bay. Besides scuba diving you can visit the nearby Arabuko Sokoke Forest known as a birdwatchers paradise but sightings of elephants, buffalo's and wild cats have been reported as well. You can head up Mida Creek with its enormous diversity of bird species and mangrove forest.
Most diving takes place inside the five times one mile large Watamu Marine National Park situated at the edges of Turtle Bay, protected by several fringed coral reefs. The northern part is where most dive boats anchor and also the place with most of the hotels. In the center, where the reefs are shallower, you will find many snorkeling boats and glass bottomed boat trips. The southern part of the park is near the entrance of Mida Creek; more challenging dive sites because of reduced visibility and increased currents and swells. Most dive sites are buoyed and only take a 10 to 20 minutes boat ride from Watamu Village. You can see whale sharks and manta rays from December to March. There are reef sharks, dolphins, sea turtles and lion fish. You can dive at several shipwrecks, visit one of its great coral gardens or cruise around a spectacular canyon dive. It is one of the better laid-back dive destination in East Africa.
